The Japanese history of tattooing began with woodblock artists, who used gouges, chisels and other equipments used in woodblock printing, to create elaborate tattoos. The use of the Nara ink, or Nara black, which turns blue-green beneath the skin - also began with them. Today, tattooing in Japan has evolved much but often pays homage to the primitive way of woodblock artists.
